Friends, family and co-workers will remember Murfreesboro Police Officer Kay Rogers during a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. today at First Baptist Church at 738 E. Castle St.
Rogers, 43, was killed on duty in a crash Nov. 9 on Middle Tennessee Boulevard. She was Murfreesboro Police Department's first and only woman motorcycle officer. Rogers' funeral was held Monday in her hometown of Jackson.
Police Chief Glenn Chrisman said many people were unable to attend the visitation and funeral service in Jackson.
"We wanted to do something to allow them to express their support and appreciation for Officer Rogers' service to her family and for police officers to honor her," Chrisman said. "We basically hope to honor Officer Rogers' memory and provide an opportunity for the citizens of Murfreesboro and members of Murfreesboro Police Department to honor her and participate in this memorial."
Speakers will be Mayor Tommy Bragg, Rogers' brother, Rickey Holt, a lieutenant with Jackson Police Department, and Rogers' "soul sister," Detective Ava Radley.
People will have a chance to speak about Rogers during the service, which is expected to last about one hour.
Because of limited parking, Chrisman asked people to carpool and park at Mercury Plaza where they can ride a shuttle to the church.
Jason Rozell, a registered nurse at Middle Tennessee Medical Center, said people may also remember Rogers by donating to the Kay Frances Rogers Memorial Fund. Contributions may be made at any First Tennessee Bank.
Rozell, who knew Rogers and treated her after the crash, established the fund in her memory. Donations will be given to her family.
What are people saying about mortgages today:Rates on 30-year mortgages edged down last week to a seven-month low. Mortgage-giant Freddie Mac reported Thursday that 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages fell to 6.3 percent, down slightly from 6.31 percent two weeks ago. It put rates at the lowest level since they were at 6.24 percent the first week of March.
Bank of Hawaii, Central Pacific Bank, Territorial Savings Bank and Wells Fargo Home Mortgages all cut their 30-year mortgage rates to 5.75 percent this week.
Most people think of a mortgage as a means to an end. After all, you buy a house, not a home loan. But a mortgage is much more than the path to homeownership. It is a financial instrument that must be managed, just like any other financial investment.
